20 Years of AIDS Walkthrough

As you can clearly see from the chart and stats below, The number not only rose very fast in the number of cases reported, but they simply did not begin to go back down until 1993. 14 years after cases began to come in.

Do not let the low numbers in the early dates fool you, this is an illusion of sorts for the true fact that these numbers were a LOT higher, these are simply the cases that they knew about and that were in fact reported. These are also cases of people living with AIDS being reported, not those that are living with HIV.

As you can see from the chart below, Death rates due to AIDS did not begin to slow down until 1996. Though 37,475 deaths is nothing to smile about, it is an incredible drop from the year before which was 50,798. This is due to the fact that drugs to treat people living with HIV/AIDS has gotten so much better over the years. This is both good and bad. It makes it possible for someone who is living with HIV/AIDS to live a much longer life, But it also sends out a mixed signal that AIDS/HIV is so treatable, that one may not have to fear getting it. This is causing the newer cases per year to no longer drop in new cases, but to stable out and begin to increase. Please note that if you are reading this, and are HIV- . Stay that way, do not let ad's and commercials about how well AIDS and HIV are treated fool you into thinking it is like like taking an antibiotic to get rid of the flu! it is far from that. Protect yourself and those that you are with by using a condom if you have sex, by not sharing needles if you are an IV drug user, and by making sure to keep yourself and those around you educated. Do not become one of the hundreds of statistics I hear say "But I never thought it could happen to me"

Below is a time scale layout chart for AIDS cases reported per state by year. second column (Total Cases Reported) May differ from the total individual reports per state. I have included a section in the last column to show you how many cases were lost in the red tape.

It is VERY important for anyone using this grid to understand the state by state per year calculations. For starters, this is cases of people living with AIDS reported. This does NOT include people living with HIV (which would be a higher number at all times).

When you see the number jump higher from one yes to the next, you are looking at new cases of people living with AIDS in that state minus the deaths of those the prior year. When you see the numbers go DOWN in the next year, please do not be misled into thinking this means that the cases are going down, this simply means that the people living with aids the year before, are no longer there. They have either passed away, or moved on to another state. The most dramatic stats are 1993 - 1994. EVERY states cases went up very drastically in 1993, and EVERY state but WV went down very drastically. These people did not all move to West Virginia. You are looking at a very large population of people that passed away between 1993 & 1994  95,590 known deaths.

You will know when the death rate and the increased case rates are going down by looking for a stable set of numbers without much change.

Between 1979-1986, the numbers for many states are spotty. This is a result of states that were not involved with reporting cases.
