1946 1991
Growing up, The band Queen was always in my life. I was a huge Queen fan which was very much out of my generation. Having all older brothers and sisters threw me into their generation of music listening pleasure. in 1991 on my birthday, Freddie Mercury announced tot he world that he was in fact suffering from AIDS. I had just turned 20 and did not have a full understanding of what AIDS was at the time. I knew it was an illness that you could die of, and still with weak education in the system, I was a person who felt "this could never happen to me." The following day, I will never forget a person at work telling me that Freddie Mercury had died of AIDS. I continues to tell him over and over again that he had not died of AIDS, that he announced he was "dying" of AIDS. Of course I was wrong, and later that day found that not only had I heard such heartbreaking news the day before of one of favorite artists, but that he was in fact dead. I think this took time to sink in. If the only thing you remember Freddie Mercury by is his death from AIDS, you need to go out and listen to his work. He was more than a singer to me, he possessed an amazing opera sounding voice that he would blend into some of the best rock and roll songs of this lifetime. His musical work left no stone unturned, and he will always be in my heart, and his music will always bring back so many memories. This is my dedication page to Freddie Mercury, and it is not to remember him as a person who died of AIDS, but a dedication to he himself as an artist like no other I have seen in my lifetime.
